Lent - Day 7

“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God.” Psalm 48:1

MORNING READING - PSALM 48

1Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised
in the city of our God.
His holy mountain, 2beautiful in elevation,
is the joy of all the earth,
Mount Zion, in the far north,
the city of the great King.
3Within its citadels God
has shown himself a sure defence.

4Then the kings assembled,
they came on together.
5As soon as they saw it, they were astounded;
they were in panic, they took to flight;
6trembling took hold of them there,
pains as of a woman in labour,
7as when an east wind shatters
the ships of Tarshish.
8As we have heard, so have we seen
in the city of the Lord of hosts,
in the city of our God,
which God establishes for ever.
Selah

9We ponder your steadfast love, O God,
in the midst of your temple.
10Your name, O God, like your praise,
reaches to the ends of the earth.
Your right hand is filled with victory.
11 Let Mount Zion be glad,
let the towns* of Judah rejoice
because of your judgements.

12Walk about Zion, go all around it,
count its towers,
13consider well its ramparts;
go through its citadels,
that you may tell the next generation
14 that this is God,
our God for ever and ever.
He will be our guide for ever.

MORNING REFLECTION

READY : Psalm 48:1 says “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised”. Allow your praises to focus your thoughts on your King.

READ: As you read through Psalm 48, take note of the awesome power of God, the Lord of hosts.

REFLECT: Reflect on verses 9-10, “We ponder your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple. Your name, O God, like your praise, reaches to the ends of the earth. “

REPENT: Psalm 48 instructs us to tell the next generation that this is our God for ever and ever. Think through and repent of the ways that you have not given God His place as ruler of your life and your family.

REJOICE: Rejoice that we serve such a powerful God who is the great King and Lord of hosts.

EVENING READING Mark 1:14-28

14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’16 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. 21 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. 22 They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, 24 and he cried out, ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.’ 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ 26 And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, ‘What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.’ 28 At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

EVENING REFLECTION

READY : Jesus called His disciples to leave their livelihoods behind and follow Him. Prepare yourself now by leaving behind your day and focusing on Jesus.

READ: Read through this passage twice noting the response of people to the words of Jesus.

REFLECT: Mark 1:27 that the people described Jesus as one who teaches with authority . Reflect on the authority of Jesus not just over evil spirits, but over the lives of those who would follow Him. Have you allowed Him to have authority in your life?

REPENT: Assess your own life. Have you responded to the call of Christ and have you allowed Him to have authority in your life?

REJOICE: Rejoice that you serve a God that has authority!
