Lent - Day 13

O Most High, when I am afraid, I put my trust in You

MORNING READING - PSALM 56

1Be gracious to me, O God, for people trample on me;
all day long foes oppress me;
2my enemies trample on me all day long,
for many fight against me.
O Most High, 3when I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
4In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I am not afraid;
what can flesh do to me?

5All day long they seek to injure my cause;
all their thoughts are against me for evil.
6They stir up strife, they lurk,
they watch my steps.
As they hoped to have my life,
7 so repay* them for their crime;
in wrath cast down the peoples, O God!

8You have kept count of my tossings;
put my tears in your bottle.
Are they not in your record?
9Then my enemies will retreat
on the day when I call.
This I know, that* God is for me.
10In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11in God I trust; I am not afraid.
What can a mere mortal do to me?

12My vows to you I must perform, O God;
I will render thank-offerings to you.
13For you have delivered my soul from death,
and my feet from falling,
so that I may walk before God
in the light of life.

MORNING REFLECTION

READY : Sit in a quiet place and prepare yourself to hear from God. Allow all distractions to melt away.

READ: As you read though this the first time, note what themes you see. Read through a second time and look closer at those themes.

REFLECT: Meditate on this phrase. “In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I am not afraid; what can flesh do to me?” This phrase is almost repeated in verses 10-11. Reflect on how often this verse is true in your life. What keeps you from trusting in God?

REPENT: Repent for the fears you have allowed to rein in your life keeping you from truly trusting in the Lord.

REJOICE: Rejoice that God has delivered your soul from death and your feet from falling so that you may walk before God in the light of life.

EVENING READING Mark 3:7-19a

7 Jesus departed with his disciples to the lake, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him; 8 hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon. 9 He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him; 10 for he had cured many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. 11 Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, ‘You are the Son of God!’ 12 But he sternly ordered them not to make him known. 13 He went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the message, 15 and to have authority to cast out demons. 16 So he appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

EVENING REFLECTION

READY : Settle into a peaceful place and intentionally pull off the stress and worries of the day. Lay them at the foot of the cross.

READ: Read through the passage once, then again. As you read through it the second time note the attraction of people to Jesus.

REFLECT: In this passage, Jesus calls out the disciples to proclaim the message and gave them authority to cast out demons. Reflect on how Jesus has given you this same calling.

REPENT: When Jesus encountered demons, their response was to fall before him and shout “You are the Son of God.” Repent of times when you do not bestow the same reverence to Jesus.

REJOICE: Rejoice that we serve a living Savior who is mighty to heal and so worthy that even demons bow before Him.
