Lent - Day 19

O THAT TODAY YOU WOULD LISTEN TO HIS VOICE

MORNING READING - PSALM 96

1O sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
3Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvellous works among all the peoples.
4For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
he is to be revered above all gods.
5For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
6Honour and majesty are before him;
strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

7Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
8Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9Worship the Lord in holy splendour;
tremble before him, all the earth.

10Say among the nations, ‘The Lord is king!
The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved.
He will judge the peoples with equity.’
11Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let the field exult, and everything in it.
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
13 before the Lord; for he is coming,
for he is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with his truth.

MORNING REFLECTION

READY : As you sit in silence, allow the Lord to meet you. Focus your thoughts on Him alone.

READ: Read through Psalm 96 twice. Focus on the words chosen to describe the Lord.

REFLECT: Mediate on the phrases “For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.” Embrace the awesomeness of the Lord.

REPENT: Psalm 96 reminds us that the Lord is coming to judge the earth. He is also the God who forgives. Allow the Lord to search your heart and repent of your sins.

REJOICE: Rejoice that the Lord is coming. Rejoice that He is an awesome God. Rejoice that He is the one true God and that He fulfills the promises of Psalm 96, and soon even the trees of the forest will sing for joy before our God.

EVENING READING John 5:25-29

25 ‘Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; 27and he has given him authority to execute judgement, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not be astonished at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29and will come out—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

EVENING REFLECTION

READY : Jesus speaks in John 5 and tells His disciples that those who hear the voice of the Son of God will hear and live. Let Jesus speak to you as you read this passage, and let the words bring you life.

READ: As you read through this passage the first time, note what stands out to you. As you read through a second time, take note of who receives life.

REFLECT: Reflect on the life that Christ has. Reflect on His authority to give life and the coming judgement. Take account of your life. Are you prepared for the final judgement? Are those around you?

REPENT: Repent of your complacency concerning the final judgement of the earth.

REJOICE: Rejoice that you have heard the call of the Son of God and that you will have a resurrection into life. Give thanks to God for life.
