Lent - Day 23

MORNING READING - PSALM 85

To the leader. Of the Korahites. A Psalm.
1Lord, you were favourable to your land;
you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2You forgave the iniquity of your people;
you pardoned all their sin.
Selah
3You withdrew all your wrath;
you turned from your hot anger.

4Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
and put away your indignation towards us.
5Will you be angry with us for ever?
Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
6Will you not revive us again,
so that your people may rejoice in you?
7Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
and grant us your salvation.

8Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
for he will speak peace to his people,
to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.*
9Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land.

10Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
11Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,
and righteousness will look down from the sky.
12The Lord will give what is good,
and our land will yield its increase.
13Righteousness will go before him,
and will make a path for his steps.

MORNING REFLECTION

READY: “Will you not revive us again so that your people may rejoice in you?”
Prepare to read through this psalm by praying for God to revive you.

READ: Read through the text twice.

REFLECT: The psalmist speaks of God being favorable to the land, that His glory
would dwell in the land, that faithfulness would spring up from the ground, and
that our land would yield an increase. Reflect on what impact revival and
restoration among God’s people has on the land.

REPENT: The psalmist cries out for God not to be angry with them as a people
forever and ask God, “Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away
your indignation toward us” Pray this verse using it as a time of repentance.

REJOICE: V. 10 speaks of steadfast love and faithfulness meeting, righteousness
and peace kissing each other. Rejoice that for us these have all met in Jesus
who turned God’s anger away from us.

EVENING READING Mark 6:30-46

The Death of John the Baptist

30 The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. 31He said to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. 33Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. 34As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. 35When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; 36send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.’ 37But he answered them, ‘You give them something to eat.’ They said to him, ‘Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii* worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?’ 38And he said to them, ‘How many loaves have you? Go and see.’ When they had found out, they said, ‘Five, and two fish.’ 39Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. 41Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. 42And all ate and were filled; 43and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.

45 Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46After saying farewell to them, he went up on the mountain to pray.

EVENING REFLECTION

READY: Jesus told His disciples, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” Determine to use this time to get away with Jesus and rest a while.

READ: Read the text through slowly.

REFLECT: This text says that Jesus seeing the crowd had compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. on this The story of the feeding of the 5000 is the only miracle told in all four gospels. Meditate on this story.

REPENT: We struggle to believe that Jesus can and will provide for us. Jesus gave each disciple a physical reminder that He does provide because after the the feeding of the 5000 there were 12 baskets of left overs, one for each disciple. Spend time in repentance over the struggle you have believing God will provide.

REJOICE: Jesus is compassionate and sensitive to our needs. He recognizes when we need to get away. He recognizes when we are hungry.. Praise our God who meets our physical and spiritual needs.
